CP U.S. HISTORYWelcome to CP United States History! This course is designed to explore the question of what it means to be an American, while focusing on the shaping of the American experience from 1850 to the present. Through both a chronological and thematic approach, the course will focus on the impact of various groups, individuals, and ideas on the nation and contemporary American identity. Based on the Mission Statement of Lincoln High School and the Rhode Island Proficiency Based Graduation Requirements System, students will develop an appreciation of our American heritage while developing the critical thinking skills necessary to make social, political, economic, geographic and cultural connections. Students will develop an appreciation for, as well as a clear understanding our American heritage and experience.
This one year course is a graduation requirement and is taken by 11th grade students. It is an essential part of the academic experience in Social Studies at Lincoln High School. You will be required to use a variety of skills to demonstrate your understanding of major concepts throughout the year. This rigorous course will incorporate a variety of primary source documents, which will coincide with reading and homework assignments from the textbook. The class format will consist of oral presentations, debates, discussions, document based essay questions, projects and lectures, aligned with the goal of improving your communication skills through reading and writing. This curriculum enables students to become proficient in social studies, meet the Common Core Standards, Rhode Island Grade Span Expectations in Government and Historical Perspectives, and fulfill the Lincoln High School Mission of becoming life-long learners in a global society.
