Elijah Lloyd Garrison

In the opinion of myself, William Lloyd Garrison, abolitionism is set apart from all other forms of anti-slavery in that is calls for IMMEDIATE and COMPLETE ending of slavery, rather than the gradualism of other philosophies. As such moderate anti-slavery advocates as Catherine Beecher argue, the destruction of slavery in an abrupt and decisive manner as I would advocate would cause strife and conflict within the South, and could be achieved by no other means than violence. However, this change simply cannot come about by any means other than violence and confrontation. Did Moses of Biblical fame advocate GRADUAL EMANCIPATION of the Israelites from their harsh slavery under the Pharaoh? NO! He brought plagues upon them, and eventually destroyed his armies in the Red Sea. Did our own Founding Fathers, when our nation was groaning under the lash of King George, declare their GRADUAL INDEPENDENCE? NO! They rather rose up in REVOLUTION, boldly declaring independence and throwing off the yoke of British servitude. And so it is with Abolition. Abolition calls for us--as AMERICANS, as CHRISTIANS, as HUMAN BEINGS--to free our OPPRESSED BROTHERS not through timid, halting gradualism that will only cause the Southerners to drag their feet even further, but through immediate action.
